A story for the Eden Community Access Centre about HELP

HELP is a new community group based in Eden, that stands for “Helping Eden’s Little Penguins”.

HELP is a volunteer, not-for profit community group that aims to support the re-establishment of a colony of Little Penguins in Eden and to raise awareness of their difficult plight.

We are a Friends Group under the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, covering and supporting our field data collection work. We also come under the Auspice of the Eden Community Access Centre (ECAC) who supports our non-field based works.

We meet every 2 months at the Eden Library on the third Saturday of the month at 10 am, see dates below.  Our next meeting is Saturday 24, August as our chairperson is away for 2 months and to plan for the Eden Whale Festival.

The groups first project is to produce good quality signs at Wheel Cove and Rotary lookout to explain to locals and visitors what is happening behind the fence.  We also aim to be a presence at the upcoming Eden Whale Festival with a small display, a new banner and a donation box.

Wheel Cove is a sea gutter that has been fenced along the cliff line using donations received from all over Australia to the Eden Little Penguins in the 1980’s.  Back then they were called Fairy Penguins and unfortunately the colony was declared extinct around 1992.

The new site at Wheel Cove is now safe for Little Penguins to breed due to the predator fence, specially designed artificial nests and a system that plays love songs into Twofold Bay.  As a result, last season, a penguin pair were successful in breeding there.
